I honestly don’t really know where to begin with this project. It was one of the great joys of my life to be able to work on a design so passionately with a team of amazing people equally committed to stretching our comfort zone to make something great. @tycole already took the definitive pictures, but I have hard drives full of my own images that have special meaning to me. These decidedly unprofessional shots are from my first day visiting the fully assembled and finished stair after literally years, of dreaming, coding, modeling, tweaking, assembling, grinding, polishing and pushing. Over a decade later and I continue to be amazed by @caliperstudio and their ability to make great things.

I love it when I’m surprised by these generative studies. This one starts as a simple exploration of lines and connections, but once you add line thickness as a variable, by about :04 the whole thing starts to look like a Keith Haring composition. Then the line thickness gets really fat and it becomes something else. So somewhere there exists an optimal arrangement of line thickness and spacing to achieve heightened Haringness. We’ll call that the Haring Zone.

I like constraints. So #3dprinting has always been a tricky area of investigation for me, because the ruling ethos is that a #3dprinter can “make anything”. While that’s certainly more true than, say, working with a bandsaw, experience has shown there are forms that are more suited to a layer-by-layer, bottom-up way of making. These images are just a few experiments with those types of forms.

I’ve worked on a lot of #3dprinted lighting projects over the years, but this one with @adam_yarinsky remains one of my favorites, because of the way we dug into the #details . The goal was to integrate the new shade with a beautiful, minimal stainless steel fixture already in place. The solution takes advantage of custom tapered connection pieces more easily fabricated with 3d printing than traditional techniques.

In 2016, I had a very strange idea to try to project fragments of letterforms onto a bridge in Weimar, Germany. Over a decade before that, I had the opportunity to spend a semester studying architecture at the Bauhaus-Universität and while immersing myself in the revolutionary modern design thinking that came out of that place, I got to indulge my love of German letters, both in the figurative sense (Deutsche Klassik, Goethe, Schiller..) and the literal sense. I lived in an old house that said “Gut Werkzeug halbe Arbeit” in strong Fraktur characters right there on the facade. And through the @pavillonpresse I learned about the work of Felix Walbaum in Weimar. He’s a super interesting figure whose work bridges so many traditions of visual culture and at some point I thought it would be great to bring some of Weimar’s graphic history together with its unique built environment to light up the Ilm.

During my time as a “digital potter” I made a lot of vases with a lot of faces. But along the way I’d also get special requests. If I remember correctly, this was an entire extended family. I remember the layout algorithm got quite complex to fit that many faces on one vase without one interfering with the next. I think my record was 16 faces, but I’d have to check.

Ok, even on an account full of strange things, this one may be particularly strange. This was part of an amazing collaboration with @kohnpedersenfox and @bostonvalleyterracotta during the Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop in 2019. The idea was to add a custom #3dprinted roller to the end of a standard die extrusion mechanism for a deeper exploration into the interaction of surface texture and glaze.

These are a few images from one of the most fun, challenging and overall weirdest periods of my life. For those of you who didn’t follow that journey, here’s a quick recap of how I ended up on the Today Show (I’ll put some links in the bio.) In May 2014, my wife and I had two small kids and I had been too busy with an architecture competition I was working on to think about Mother’s Day. But as it happened I had the day before free and the office where I was working had just gotten a new 3d printer. So I snapped some shots and headed in to make a vase. About a half year later, some friends convinced me to take the parametric design tool I’d created and put it to work for other people selling vases on Kickstarter. 3d printers are fun and I thought this could be a way to get my own. So after convincing my extremely patient wife to help me put together a cringy Kickstarter launch video (link in bio), Fahz was born. (“Fahz -It’s your face in a vase!” Get it???) …

A few years ago, during a not particularly creative period in my professional life, I decided to combine two of my loves—meticulous #metalwork and #newyorkcity—to take part in a competition sponsored by @nycsanitation and @van_alen to update NYC’s iconic green metal mesh trash cans. I didn’t win, but the project did manage to scratch a particular itch.

I’ve been inspired by calligraphic mark-making since I first held a broad nib pen in junior high art class. For me, traditions of ornamental writing from around the world show clearly the generative power of combining simple graphic rules with human intuition and craft. This study combines the controlled chaos of a double pendulum kinetic system with the refined visual logic of an angled pen. Originally, I was interested in the marks themselves, but over time I started to appreciate the gestural qualities that are hinted at in the changes of speed and direction. Those aspects aren’t fully explored here, but I’m starting to think it’s something I should be looking at.

One day I made an awful lot of geometry. I’m always interested in creating systems to make objects. In this case the forms themselves were constrained by a desire to have them quickly 3d-printed. I translated 2d physics simulations between rigid bodies with the z-axis representing the time component of the interactions. That methodology actually corresponds very well to additive manufacturing processes which mostly require one layer to be printed over the previous layer in a sequential manner. I printed a few hundred of these things at one point and they still show up in random drawers when I’m looking for a screwdriver.

These are some screen shots of a guitar stand I designed, but never really got around to fabricating. I think I like the fluted version better (slides 3 and 4). Maybe the fluting needs to be emphasized a bit more. And then it needs to be printed.

I made this in January, 2018. I don’t remember the specifics, but I know I was feeling overwhelmed by the seeming hopeless of our politics. So I made what is possibly the weakest-ass, no-risk “protest” statement you could imagine. But what’s funny is that I keep coming back to it. When things are messed up, sometimes a simple acknowledgment of the shit show is an important first step. No, this is not normal.

There’s not much to this. I was doing dishes and there was something so simple and so good about how these repetitive elements (bowls) came together to create a new geometry that adhered to a different set of rules. There’s probably something more profound to be discovered, but it hasn’t happened yet. And the dishes never got done.
